The question of what is medical tape used for? Can be misleading. The answer is different for each individual patient. Understanding your specific needs can go a long way in helping you decide which type and size of medical tape you may need. Medical tapes come in a wide variety of styles and sizes and with just some easy answers to some simple questions, you can choose which medical tape is appropriate for you.

Ever since it started gaining visibility on the bodies of Olympic and professional athletes, many people have been curious about the possible benefits of kinesiology tape, or kinesio tape for short.

Do those brightly colored strips of tape help athletes by preventing musculoskeletal pain or treating injuries? Can they help me too?

Research is still ongoing, but most studies so far point to the answer: Probably not. Or, at least, no more so than any other means of pain reduction for sports injuries.

The standard white athletic tape that athletes and coaches have used for decades is made of stiff cotton and can help immobilize or stabilize an injured body part. However, the tape has polymer elastic strands woven through the cotton so that the tape is flexible and does not impede range of motion when used.

Despite its flexibility, Kinesio taping stabilizes muscles and allows athletes to be aware of muscle engagement, known as proprioception. Additionally, some claim that it slightly lifts the skin off the muscle, which can help reduce swelling and improve blood flow to the muscle.

Kinesio taping manufacturers and health experts offer some taping recommendations to prevent or treat the following injuries:

IT band injuries
Shin splints
Hamstring injuries
Achilles tendinitis
Plantar fasciitis
Rotator cuff
Tennis elbow

Testing the effectiveness of Kinesio Tapes
However, research has failed to support these benefits, or at least most of them. A total of 18 studies on the efficacy of kinesio tape were examined in 2 systematic reviews, with 6 to 7 studies suggesting that the use of kinesio tape may have some benefit in relieving immediate musculoskeletal pain.

None of the studies showed any significant benefit from kinesio tape in terms of long-term pain relief, improvement in strength or range of motion. The authors of both reviews concluded that there was insufficient evidence to support the use of kinesio tape to prevent or treat injury, or to improve strength or range of motion.

Still, many experts believe kinesio tape may have positive psychological effects. Anecdotal evidence about its efficacy may reflect its placebo effect in users-if people believe it helps them, it may actually help.
