The idea behind skin tape is to provide additional support to the skin closure, as well as potentially improve scarring, so the best answer is to leave them in place as long as the adhesive is attached to at least a portion of both sides of the incision, and as long as no odor or drainage is "trapped" by the tape, which can obscure visualization of the incision. There is a downside, but wound infection is rare, especially with a skilled and precise closure, which means accurate skin approximation, fine suture materials, gentle tissue handling, and layering techniques to reduce wound tension. In other words, not all surgeons do or close equally, and tape will not make up for a poor or sloppy closure. You should ask your doctor if they need more tape after the incision comes off, especially if this is only a few days after placement. Most of my incisions dry up within a day or two, so when I use tape, I expect them to be in place for at least a week or more. If the wound is particularly bleeding or oozing, and the tape comes loose quickly, I usually want to look at the wound anyway, and will often re-tape it for continued support (it is usually much drier now).

Assuming that microscopic damage to the skin reflects pain felt on the skin, we statistically analyzed skin pain during tape peeling to show the mesh skin protection effect on the new tape. The tape has a three-layer structure consisting of a tape substrate, an adhesive, and a mesh. When the tape is applied to the skin, a mesh appears between the adhesive and the skin. The adhesive contacts the skin through the mesh, fixing the substrate to the skin; it does not contact the skin at the mesh; therefore, the adhesive has a reduced contact area with the skin.
