Elastic Bandages for Compression and Support After an Injury
Joint injuries can often be treated initially with an elastic bandage for compression and support. However, there are many reasons and ways to use an elastic bandage after an injury, and sometimes it should not be used at all. Here are some tips on when and how to use an elastic bandage.
Elastic bandages have many benefits
Applying an elastic bandage immediately after an injury can serve a variety of purposes:
- Control swelling around an injured joint
- Hold an ice pack in place
- Immobilize a splint after a fracture or severe sprain
- Keep other bandages secure and protected
How to Use an Elastic Bandage Properly
- Elastic bandages should not be used on open wounds. Clean and dress the wound before applying any type of bandage, splint, or other support. Severe wounds require professional medical care.
- Do not wrap too tightly. A bandage wrapped too tightly can completely cut off circulation. Swelling, numbness or tingling, or discoloration at the ends of the bandage means the bandage is too tight and needs to be adjusted.
- Keep fingers and toes bare and free to move. It will also help to keep an eye out for any changes in the injured area, such as increased redness or swelling, which should be checked by a doctor.
- Adjust your bandage throughout the day. Unwrap the injured area, re-bandage it, and secure it with a clip or tape, taking care not to create any wrinkles or twists when wrapping the bandage. A smooth bandage will apply even pressure to the injured area.
Know when to stop using an elastic bandage
The pain and swelling from a sprain can mask a more serious underlying injury, so know when you need more help.
- If swelling and pain get worse, you'll need to seek professional treatment.
- If you still feel numbness or tingling in the injured area after removing the bandage, see your doctor.
- If you suspect a fracture has occurred as a result of a ligament sprain, your doctor can confirm the injury with an X-ray or MRI and prescribe the right treatment
